Pains of Parenthood

It is difficult when kids leave home.
When they are living far away. And when they are unwell, it is even worse. It could even be a slight cold. Or a touch of fever.

The elder one told me the other day that she was feeling slightly under the weather. Its crazy , but I immediately had ‘sympathetic pains’( I know it sounds silly, but it's true!). And told her so.

Her reaction –‘Are you sure they are sympathetic pains?’ 'Nothing serious?'

‘Do you need to go to the doctor?’

A week later scene shifts to the younger one. I am worried sick. At least the elder one is married. She has someone to take care of her.  But this one, poor thing is on her own.  With another roommate as young as her.  Again the sympathetic pains. I know I should not tell her, but I do.

‘I have these sympathetic pains’.

‘Don’t be silly’. ‘You are only trying to get some attention away from me!!’

For a moment, she does not sound weak and ill.
Am I offended? No, not one bit. I am reassured.

All Izz Well...

  3. 'sympathetic pain' actually sounded medical enough, and a quick googling confirms it, so I am hoping it's not what you meant.
I think the elder one can do with a strong dose of energy booster kiddy pack. The summer vacation crazed trio at home needs a new victim to feed on as well.I am sending them her way this weekend.;-). Do not worry she will taken care off :)

    Indrani - :-(
Deepak - haha. I did not mean those sympathetic pains. I am not ready for that!! Just pain in sympathy otherwise. Kiddy pack!! Good, you could do with some peace and quiet.

  5. Sympathetic pain surely will happen. They say in Tamil: Thaan aadavittalum thun sadhai aadum. It is natural, especialy with mom and her kids.

  12. Never thought of this! Its possible you know. My mom used to get allergies and boils worrying about me while I was in college. I don't think those were sympathy pains though! :)

Another 5 years and I will be in the same boat,God Willing!

  16. Manju, Neena: - Yes only a parent would know
Nona - The younger one after reading the post had another caustic comment ( she gets away with murder!), but she was really really sick and resulted in so many sleepless nights.
Samvedna - But you would understand her worries better now, don't you?
    Dipali - thank you.
Jyothi - Allergies and boils. Wow! What did you do?
Arvind - they did, they wisely refrained from putting their comments here, but did by mail and over the phone.
KP - SG has said right.

  17. Hmm..It was more of what I could do rather than what I actually did... :) Moms worry too much..But we understand that only when we have kids and especially when they are staying away from us!!! A complete life cycle, I guess...

  19. You know Radha - children feel EXACTLY the same about parents when both are older. I am a total worry wart where my parents are concerned. Like you I always worry that they live alone, in a different city and if they so much as sneeze I get all tensed! Your children will get that way too when you're older!! :)

  20. Pain of any kind, is part of life. Feeling pain on someone else's injury is too human. No other species can claim that feeling.
We cant see our children getting any form of sufferings. But then,if we could extend that attitude to the outside world, life would become different.
